Unstoppable suffered various production challenges before filming could commence, including casting, schedule, location and budgetary concerns. Production was headquartered in Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania, where the fictional railroad depicted in the movie, the "Allegheny and West Virginia Railroad," is headquartered.

The Western New York and Pennsylvania Railroad 's Buffalo Line was used for two months during daylight, while the railroad ran its regular freight service at night.

Listed as having , people, this would have made Stanton more than twice the size of Pittsburgh in , whereas the city which was set as Stanton, Bellaire, Ohio, was considerably smaller, having just over 4, residents.

A two-day filming session took place at the Hooters restaurant in Wilkins Township , a Pittsburgh suburb, featuring 10 Hooters girls from across the United States.

Principal photography began on August 31, , [28] for a release on November 12, The video for the song "Beyond Tension" by Texas based, electronic musician Jon Dishongh, can be seen playing on two background televisions across multiple scenes.

This occurred by accident due to a cast member watching various music videos during breaks, while on set. Filming was delayed for one day when part of the train accidentally derailed on November 21, CP and played and in early scenes, and CP and were given a damaged look for later scenes.

The plow on appears to have been repainted black as of Most of the other locomotives seen in the film, including chase locomotive , and the locomotive consist used in an attempt to stop the train, and , were played by EMD SDs leased from the Wheeling and Lake Erie Railway.

Passenger coaches carrying schoolchildren were provided by the Orrville Railroad Heritage Society. Led by CSX Transportation SD , the train left the Walbridge, Ohio , rail yard with no one at the controls, after the hostler got out of the slow-moving train to correct a misaligned switch, mistakenly believing he had properly set the train's dynamic braking system, much as his counterpart Dewey in the film mistakenly believed he had properly set the locomotive's throttle in the CSX incident, the locomotive had an older-style throttle stand where the same lever controlled both the throttle and the dynamic brakes; in fact, putting on "full throttle" and "full brakes" both involved advancing the same lever to the highest position after switching to a different operating mode.

Thus if the engineer failed to properly switch modes, it was easy to accidentally apply full throttle instead of full brake, or vice versa. Two of the train's tank cars contained thousands of gallons of molten phenol , a toxic ingredient of paints and dyes harmful when it is inhaled, ingested, or brought into contact with the skin.

Attempts to derail it using a portable derailer failed, and police were unable to shoot out the fuel release valve, instead hitting the fuel cap.

The train was stopped just southeast of Kenton, Ohio. No one was seriously injured in the incident. When the film was released, the Toledo Blade compared the events of the film to the real-life incident.

As explained in the movie, the dead man's switch failed because the only available brakes were the independent brakes, which were quickly worn through, similar to CSX The film exaggerates the possible damage the phenol could have caused in a fire, and he found it incredible that the fictional AWVR freely disseminated information such as employees' names and images and the cause of the runaway to the media.

In the real instance, he writes, the cause of the runaway was not disclosed until months later when the National Transportation Safety Board released its report, and CSX never made public the name of the engineer whose error let the train slip, nor what disciplinary action was taken.

The film score was composed by Harry Gregson-Williams and the soundtrack album was released on December 7, A trailer was released online on August 6, The site's critical consensus reads, "As fast, loud, and relentless as the train at the center of the story, Unstoppable is perfect popcorn entertainment—and director Tony Scott's best movie in years.

Film critic Roger Ebert rated the film three and a half stars out of four, remarking in his review, "In terms of sheer craftsmanship, this is a superb film.

The Globe and Mail in Toronto was more measured. While the film's action scenes "have the greasy punch of a three-minute heavy-metal guitar solo", its critic felt the characters were weak.

It called the film "an opportunistic political allegory about an economy that's out of control and industries that are weakened by layoffs, under-staffing and corporate callousness.

Director Quentin Tarantino highlighted the film in a January episode of the podcast Rewatchables, and included it in his list of the ten best of the decade.

Unstoppable was expected to take in about the same amount of money as the previous year's The Taking of Pelham , another Tony Scott film involving an out-of-control train starring Denzel Washington.

The dispatchers divert the runaway onto a branch after determining it is only five minutes away from a head-on collision.

Further ahead the train has a tight curve near a chemical plant. Barstow agrees that they must crash it, thus condemning the three people, rather than risk a chemical explosion.

Warden Ranken forces Barstow to help him reach the train by helicopter. Manny tries to force Buck into a suicidal scramble around the outside of the second engine's frozen nose.

Sara's intervention on Buck's behalf forces an armed face-off. Emotionally broken, all three slump into depression.

Suddenly Ranken's accomplice is lowered from a helicopter to the lead engine but falls through the windshield of the second engine, and then under the train.

Spurred on by the appearance of his arch-enemy and resolved not to return to prison, Manny makes a perilous leap to the lead engine.

He barely makes it, crushing his hand. Ranken boards the locomotive from the helicopter, but Manny ambushes and handcuffs him. Ranken orders Manny to stop the train before it crashes, but Manny has chosen to die rather than be recaptured.

Ranken says that he knows how to die too. When reminded of Buck and Sara in the second engine, Manny uncouples his out-of-control lead engine.

He waves goodbye, ignoring Buck's screaming pleas to shut down the lead engine, and climbs onto the roof of the lone engine in the freezing snow, his arms stretched out, ready to meet his end.

Buck and Manny's fellow inmates mourn in their cells as the lone engine disappears into the storm. Akira Kurosawa read an article in a Life magazine by Warren Young about a runaway train.

He thought it would make a good film and contacted Joseph E. Levine about doing an international co-production. Levine's Embassy Pictures.

The script was written by Kurosawa, Oguni Hideo and Kikushima Ryuzo, about two escaped convicts who hide on board a stationary train, only for it to roll away, gradually picking up tremendous speed.

Sidney Carroll was hired to adapt Kurosawa's script into English. The film would be shot along tracks between Syracuse and Rochester in New York over 16 weeks in October Plans to shoot were cancelled at the last minute, only to be scheduled and cancelled yet again.

Coppola and his producer, Tom Luddy, suggested Andrei Konchalovsky. The director succeeded in raising finance from Cannon Films. Manny, the character played by Voight, feels, 'Win or lose, what's the difference?

We tend to love winners, and we don't like losers. Konchalovsky knew Jon Voight, who had helped get the director his visa to work in the US in Voight wanted Konchalovsky to direct Rhinestone Heights which was ultimately never made.

Karen Allen was announced for the female lead. There are scenes where I'm walking across the top of a train — things like that. I really wanted to do something that called for a lot of physical acting, where I'm acting not as much with words as with my body.

The Alaska Railroad decided that their name and logo would not be shown. During filming, the crew realized they didn't have any real snow, due to warm temperatures a false spring in the area.

They used Christmas tree flock for fake snow, and they had to keep it from melting on the tracks at the west yard.

Approximately extras were hired to play prisoners in the scenes. They spent a week filming several scenes at the prison.

Finally the second unit team went to Whittier, Alaska , to film on the Alaska Railroad tracks. The scene where Jordan makes the switch on the tracks was filmed at Portage, Alaska.

The cast and crew went to the Pan-Pacific Auditorium in Los Angeles, to film the interior of the train scenes and the prisoners' escape scene.

Filming was finally completed in late April The latter two locomotives had previously been rebuilt by ARR with low short hoods as opposed to a GP7's original high short hood, but were fitted with mock-up high hoods made of plywood for the film, branded with fictional numbers and , respectively.

Because 's cab had been reconstructed prior to filming, the '' prosthetic hood stood slightly higher than the normal hood height of a GP7 in order to fit over the locomotive's number-board.

Richard Rick Holley was killed prior to start of principal photography when the helicopter he was piloting hit power lines while scouting for shoot locations in Alaska.

The film is dedicated to him during the closing credits. Runaway Train had its premiere in New York City on November 15, , followed by its limited release in theatres on December 6, It was released nationwide on January 17, and was well received by critics, but failed to find an audience.

After a taxing cross-country walk n a swim across a freezing river, the two fellas board an empty train but their joy is interrupted when the old driver falls off due to heart attack and the train accelerates.

Indeed a fine piece, from the era when action movies were taken over by the likes of Schwarzenegger or Stallone.

But the production company seemed to completely ignore this fact, and have chosen to base their movie on an old Akira Kurosawa screenplay.

Risky choice, but as we know it didn't paid off - it was the last Northbrook film, and the Cannon-Golan companies didn't last much longer either. So Runawy Train might have been a financial failure, but I'd call it an artistic success.

The technical specs doesn't show that it was shot on some kind of special equipment, but the way they captured the snowy landscape is still a masterpiece.

If someone appreciates this kind of detail, it's definitely a must-watch movie in the digitally renewed version, if possible. Otherwise the story is good too - not as much action, craziness and twists as in other 80s productions, but it has a tasty outcome between the good guy and the bad guy - probably Kurosawa would have done it better, but I really can't blame the directors for every little mistake.

The last strong point of this movie is probably the cast, however - some might find Eric Roberts and a few supporting actors a bit irritating sometimes.

Anyways, Jon Voight is at his best here. Unfortunately, other aspects of the movie seemed to be rather mediocre - very generic music choices, dull stunts and decorations, strange cuts.

But those only play a minor part in the big picture, so I can recommend Runaway Train to anybody, who's just after a little entertainment. Looking for some great streaming picks?
